We all have the responsibility to be eco-friendly. The environment belongs to all of us, and we want to have clean air to breathe and clean water to consume. Living green doesn’t have to be hard and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some great ways you can make it a part of your life as well as to encourage others.

Educate

Share information with your family, friends, and co-workers about being eco-friendly. If there aren’t programs in place, you can offer to help start them up in your community. This should include where you work and where your children go to school. Talk at school board meetings and local community board meetings to address the issue and what can be done. Forming a committee of others that wish to help is a great idea.

Eliminate Chemicals from your Home

You don’t have to rely on expensive cleaners with harsh chemicals and fumes to make your home clean. In fact, such products can be harmful for your family and your pets. Use all natural cleaners to get the job done just as well.

Buy Products with Biodegradable Packaging

Most products out there today at familiar retailers are being sold with biodegradable packaging. Pay attention to those brands that are and show them your support. You will find that it doesn’t increase the price of what you pay for. You can also write letters to those companies you love that aren’t doing this yet. As a consumer, you have the power to get them to start offering such packaging down the road.

Recycle

So much of what is tossed out and ends up in the landfills doesn’t need to. For example, you can recycle aluminum. You can also get a battery recharging system so that you aren’t tossing out old batteries. Have a compost bin outside that a great deal of your scraps can go into. Save your glass and your plastic too in separate containers. When they get full, take them to a centralized recycling location.

Solar Power

The use of solar power at home is a great idea. It can provide you with electricity and with heat. You can do this on a small scale or a large scale. For example, placing solar power lanterns along your walk way path is a good idea. They are inexpensive and look great. Plus, you aren’t going to have to leave your porch light on for hours anymore when you leave for the evening. A solar power hot water heater is going to save you money too.

Adding solar panels to your roof allows you to collect energy that you can use as electricity in your home. There are kits you can buy and install or you can get a contractor to do the work for you. If you are buying a newer home, look for one that already has the benefits of solar energy in place. All of these ideas can help you to live eco-friendly and to feel great about your contributions.
