How To Build Wind Turbines – Reduce Your Electricity Bills With Home Wind Turbines

If you are interested to have your electricity bills drop each month, a home made wind turbine can be the alternative source of energy that you are looking for. If you buy one from a manufacturer, it will cost you thousands of dollars. But, if you have the basic tools and the craftsmanship to construct from basic carpentry, you can build your do-it-yourself wind turbine. You can have your home made wind turbine for less than $200.

When you have your own wind turbine, you will feel the savings you get from lower electricity costs. Wind turbines are friendly to the environment or which is referred to as “green” energy. To encourage the people to use energy like wind turbines, there are states in the US that also offer tax incentives.

Wind energy is also available anywhere just like solar energy that gets its power from the Sun. Basically, you get free energy and no more additional cost except your construction cost. You can purchase the materials from your local hardware store

There are four components of the wind turbine, namely – the tower, the battery, the turbine and the tail. Moreover, there are two types of wind turbines depending on the orientation. Horizontal axis turbines have their blades rotating along horizontal axis while other wind turbines have their blades along vertical axis. Horizontal axis turbines are used for generating power and are more efficient than the vertical axis turbines.

A small wind turbine needs the minimum motor requirements of a 260 VDC, 5 A continuous duty treadmill motor with a 6-inch threaded hub. Basic tools that you should have and would need are drill, drill bits, jigsaw with metal blade, pipe wrench, flat head screwdriver, crescent wrench, vise grip &/or clamp, wire strippers, tape measure, marker pen, compass and protractor, and a ¼” #20 thread tapping set. Of course, it helps to have an extra hand from your friends.


Aside from the motor, you will need the following materials – a 30-50 Amp blocking diode, motor bolts, 3” x 11” PVC pipe or larger depending of the treadmill motor, 8” PVC pipe for the blades of 24” length, one square foot of lightweight metal for the tail, and some appropriate screws and bolts. A used roller paint metal tray can be a good substitute for the lightweight metal that you can buy at the hardware store.

Using a jigsaw, you can cut 4 rectangular pieces of 8” x 24” PVC pipe to make the eight blades. Then sand the PVC turbine blades to achieve your desired airfoil. Next, you can make the metal tail in any shape and in any dimension as long as it is stiff and not floppy. Bolt your blades to the hub. Then, make protective sleeve for the motor from PVC strips.

After you have made your blades, tail and assembly of motor, you can proceed to make your base for the tower. Depending on the velocity of wind that goes through your wind turbines, the amount of energy power expressed in watts is good enough to save money for you. Four blades at 20 mph wind can generate 1,215 watts. Very good, is it not?
