Wind Power Facts

There is wind power all around the globe and this comes from the fact that planet Earth receives unequal amount of exposure from the Sun. Dry land heats up and cools down faster than in the waters. The effect is a natural convection system. The winds are fanned from different directions and, mostly in higher land areas, the wind power is greater.

For the past five years from year 2005 to 2009, the top ten countries using wind power energy have been United States, Germany, China, Spain, India, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Portugal and Denmark. Denmark has the highest consumption of wind power accounting to almost 1/5 of its electricity generation. Denmark has also the highest stationary electricity production at 20%.

You should know that wind power is dependent also on the location. If you are lucky to have an area of regular strong winds, then it is good to install a wind power project. There is now the measurement of WPD or wind power density. In fact, the first step in deciding what places are ideal for placing wind turbines is make use of wind power density.

Wind turbines have monopolized the type of wind power over the simpler windmills and wind pumps. Yet, not much energy is derived from wind power as only strong winds can actually generate electrical energy. Even though wind power is used as a support or backup for fuel-fired electricity generators, it is still a safe and cheap source of energy.

The entire worldwide nameplate capacity of wind-powered generators at the end of 2009 was 159.2 GW or gigawatts. This is expected to go up with more and more countries planning for wind turbines and join the club of countries utilizing wind energy.

Offshore wind farms are said to generate more wind power. Being on water and away from land, better wind speeds are experienced in these water areas than on land areas. It has been forecasted that offshore wind power capacity worldwide will increase dramatically in the year 2020 with a capacity of 75 GW or gigawatts from contributions from China and the United States. This is something of good news as superpowers are seriously considering less dependence of oil and are bent to rely on natural resource of energy.

Saving the world from inadequate source of energy has been a problem predicted to plague the world. Fossil fuel where crude oil is extracted is non-renewable. Its reserves are depleting. Besides, the effects of the planet Earth heating up is also due to the greenhouse effect emissions from the pollutants of fuel energy.

Today, more and more are convinced that wind power supplements solar energy. If eventually the world would have lost its reserves from fossil fuel, then chaos might set in from competition over limited source of energy. Wind power brings relief and solution to the crisis of non-renewable energy. The winds fanned around the globe are readily available and wind power is there for the world to harness and save mankind from destruction.
