No doubt that the Sun has the strongest and strangest source of energy in the universe. It radiates energy that provides heat and light to our planet Earth 24 hours every day wherever the globe spins. Scientists continue to probe what makes up the Sun and new discoveries astound them like it never fails to amaze such as the mystery where it never burns out. It continually produces huge gaseous forms of burning fires. The Sun seems to have limitless source of energy.

If solar energy cannot be available at night, it has been found out that solar energy can be stored. This is why scientists have proposed the use of solar energy as an alternative source of energy over the conventional types of energy using hydro-electrical systems, nuclear power plants, and petroleum-based.

The principal advantage of solar energy is its availability anytime. Technology in solar energy is generally classified as active solar and passive solar. Active solar technologies use photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors. On the other hand, passive solar technologies use designs, materials, and orientation of physical structures like buildings to the Sun. Designs are made like spaces that naturally circulate air. There are materials with light dispersing properties or those with favorable thermal mass.

Solar energy has been beneficial to society as it saves the consumption of electrical power. Architectural designs of homes, offices, and other installations that are inspired to harness solar energy have proven to be effective in creating a new outlook in construction. It also renders service to reduce government spending and private spending for unnecessary expenses for heating rooms and halls in low temperate zones. Ironically, solar energy has been utilized to cool areas in urban areas with high temperature climate in running cooling systems or through ingenious designs for natural air to cool hot areas.

Agriculture, horticulture and food production has been shifting to solar energy from the traditional methods. Solar energy has benefitted farms and plantations for providing energy in pumping water, drying crops and chicken manure, brooding chicks, powering grape pressers, and in efficient greenhouses containing vegetables, flowers or fruits. Ventilation, cooling, and heating are some of the activities that solar energy can power enterprises.

More and more inventions using solar energy have arrived and are serving society all over the world. The creation of solar-powered houses and solar-powered cars are now available in progressive countries like Japan, Australia, and in other countries in Europe. Solar powered sailboats are now operating. Solar balloons are being tested for future use as vehicle for humans. However, it is being extensively applied to toys and in unmanned airships used by for ballistic missile defense.

Thermal collectors have been effective in large production facilities such as drying clothes and drying coffee beans that also utilize solar energy for the entire manufacturing complexes for heating, lighting and ventilation. Energy from the Sun is still being harnessed for other purposes that will save our planet Earth from depletion of non-renewable sources.

The advantages of solar energy outweigh the disadvantages.  It is the cost of installing the solar panels that have been prohibited for many to access the technology.  Until this improves, only those who have disposable cash will be able to afford to install a photovoltaic (PV) system.
